HOW DOES A HEAT PUMP OPERATE?
Heat pump hot water systems work on a similar basis to reverse cycle air conditioners, in that they use a heat exchanger and pump to take heat from the air outside your home and convert this into energy. - A fan draws air through an evaporator. Thermal energy within the air is transferred to a liquid refigerant causing it change into a gas.
- The refrigerant gas is then drawn into a compressor which increases the pressure and as a result increases the temperature.
- A condenser (heat exchanger) then transports the hot gas refrigerant around the outsider of the water tank. This heats the water inside the tank and the gaseous refrigerant reverts into a liquid.
- The pressure of the referigerant is reduced as it goes through an expansion valve and returns to the evaporator for the process to start again.
