ELECTRIC HOT WATER SYSTEMS
HOW DOES AN ELECTRIC HOT WATER SYSTEM WORK?
Electric hot water storage systems consist of a water storage tank and an electric element that is used for heating. The element automatically heats the cold water that is stored in the tank until it reaches a set temperature, at which time it switches off. The stored hot water is then available to use whenever you need it. When the stored hot water has been used, the tank automatically refills and the electric element begins to heat the replenished tank once more, meaning that you are never caught short with no access to hot water.
WHAT SIZE SYSTEM IS RIGHT FOR ME?
Electric hot water storage systems come in a variety of sizes, and the capacity of your hot water tank will ultimately depend on the size of your home and the space you have available. For instance, there are compact hot water storage tanks that can be situated under a kitchen bench, in a cupboard or in the laundry, while if you have more space available, or you need more hot water more often, there are larger units that have a storage capacity in excess of 300 litres. A four-person household typically needs a 125–160L tank for a continuous system or 250–315L for off-peak.
One of the benefits of an electric hot water system is that you can generally program it so that it only automatically heats water during off-peak and low tariff times, as a means of keeping your electricity costs to a minimum. You can also set a maximum temperature to which the water will be heated, so there is no risk that the water in your bathroom or kitchen will be too hot to be used safely.
- Same footprint when replacing a like-for-like unit, saving money on replacement costs
- Most affordable unit to purchase
- Lower tariffs are often available during off-peak times
- Emissions are very high
- When installed on an off-peak tariff, high chance of running out of hot water during heavy-load days
